COLON THERAPY FAQ
WHAT IS A WOODS METHOD GRAVITY CENTERED COLONIC?
A Woods method gravity centered colonic uses only the forces of gravity to simultaneously bring the water in and out of the body. Because the body is used to the force of gravity, it allows for the colonic to be gentle and yet have great results. The focus of the colonic is on what is leaving the system rather than what is going in. Because the Woods method encourages the colon to, "wake up", and do the work of releasing on its own, this method can strengthen the muscles of the colon which eventually results in better bowel movements. CAN I HAVE A COLONIC ON MY PERIOD? WHEN I FEEL SICK? WHEN I HAVE A HEADACHE?
Having a colonic on your period can be ideal because the body is already in a state of releasing what’s not needed. Getting a colonic when you feel sick/have a headache helps the body to recover much faster as the illness/headache/fatigue is usually pointing to some kind of congestion in the body.
HOW LONG IS A SESSION?
A session usually lasts about 1 hour with an additional 10 minutes to use the toilet when the session is finished.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A GRAVITY COLONIC?
The therapist will bring you into the room and give you an intro to the process. There is a massage table with a disposable under pad for you to lie upon once you get undressed from just the waist down. There will also be a disposable drape sheet that will go over the top of your lower half to keep your modesty. There will be a five gallon tank that holds filtered water positioned a few feet above the foot of the massage table and a waste hose that is positioned at the foot of the table. The five gallon tank has a feed in hose attached to it that allows water to flow into your colon. The session starts with you lying down on your left side. A speculum is then inserted in your rectum that is about the size of your thumb. The speculum has two openings, one for the waste hose that will carry all matter out of the body and one opening for the small feed in hose. This allows the simultaneous in and out flow of water so that when matter is ready to go, it can leave the body immediately. Eventually you will be turned onto your back to help empty the whole colon. The session ends with you on lying down on your left side and you use the toilet if needed to empty out any remaining water. And the session ends. CAN I GET A COLONIC IF I AM PREGNANT?
Please check with your doctor before booking a colonic when pregnant. Generally, colon therapy is very helpful during pregnancy and can be done after the first trimester.
HOW OFTEN CAN I DO COLONICS? HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?
There is no set number for how often someone can or should do colonics as the needs of each person vary. It depends on your goals and what you want for yourself.
DO COLONICS WASH AWAY GOOD BACTERIA?
No. There are two kinds of bacteria in the colon: anaerobic (lives best in a low oxygen environment) and aerobic (lives best in a high oxygen environment). Good bacteria thrive in a clean, well oxygenated intestine. A colonic helps to promote more of the aerobic bacteria to take hold in the colon because of the increased level of oxygen that results from having the colon freed up of retained matter. While we do need anaerobic, "bad", bacteria to balance the the aerobic, "good", bacteria (the ratio being roughly 80% good bacteria and 20% bad bacteria), it is often more true that our intestines are hosting more bad bacteria than good. Colonics can help to restore this balance of bacteria in the intestines into a more optimal state.
WILL I BECOME DEPENDENT ON COLONICS?
With the Woods method, you cannot develop a dependency on colonics because the colonic wakes up the natural ability of the colon to do what it already knows how to do. The function of the colon is supported and encouraged, not taken over by the colonic.
IS IT PAINFUL?
For the most part, a colonic is painless. You may experience some nausea, cramping etc during the session due to matter leaving the body and the colon really doing its best to move out what is no longer needed as quickly as possible.
HOW CAN I EXPECT TO FEEL AFTER A COLONIC?
Most people experience a sense of lightness after their colonic and openness in the abdomen and throughout the body. Sometimes some people, especially those with chronic, long-term constipation and chronic inflammation, might feel tired and need to to rest. This is normal as the body was working to let go of as much matter as possible during the session.
I FELT REALLY ILL/CRAMPY/BLOATED ETC AFTER A COLONIC, IS THIS NORMAL?
Usually if someone feels weak, bloated, crampy, has a headache, body chills etc, this is often a reliable indicator that another colonic is needed. Sometimes people need two or more sessions to completely empty the colon because they are very backed up. Ginger and mint tea are also great for helping to settle the colon.
HOW IS A COLONIC DIFFERENT FROM AN ENEMA?
The Woods method of colon therapy is very similar to an enema in the sense that both techniques use gravity to bring the water into the body. Where they differ is in that a colonic allows for the simultaneous in and out flow of water so that a larger volume of water can enter/exit the body over time. The enema only allows for the in flow of water, and you must sit on the toilet to release. The colonic is much more powerful than an enema in its ability to quickly and gently help the body release more matter than an enema as a result of the simultaneous in and out flow of water.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A COLONIC PRE/POST SESSION?
If you eat meat: it is best to have clean proteins (eggs, fish, chicken, turkey, cheese) and vegetables (except potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash). It is also best if you eat fruit, to eat fruit only in the morning on a empty stomach by itself.
If you are vegan/vegetarian/gluten free vegan/gluten free vegetarian: it is best to eat vegetables and grains that agree the best with your system. It is also best to have fruit just in the morning on a empty stomach (wait 30 minutes after eating fruit to eat/drink anything else).
Please refrain from drinking alcohol, any carbonated beverages including seltzer water, and kombucha.
Stop eating 3 hours before a colonic and stop drinking liquids an hour before the session. This is for your comfort during the session. If you would like to learn more on how to prepare for a colonic, click here.
Food combining is also very helpful to do before, during and after a colonic as it simplifies the process of digestion, cuts down on the formation of gas, and allows for the food that you eat to transit through the digestive system much more easily. To learn more about food combining, click here.
I HAVE AN IUD, CAN I DO A COLONIC?
Yes, it is ok to do a colonic with an IUD.
WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER A COLONIC? CAN I GO BACK TO WORK?
You can do whatever you wish to do after a colonic including going back to work.
CAN I DO A COLONIC BEFORE/AFTER IE MASSAGE, ACUPUNCTURE, IV THERAPY ETC?
A colonic is ideal to do before or after any kind of therapy as most therapies help the body to open up on some level. The body will want to detoxify more deeply as a result of opening up. The colon is a receptacle of a large volume of what the body is able to detoxify and because of this, doing a colonic can be helpful and makes the therapy (acupuncture, massage, sauna session etc) much more effective.
I HAVE HEMORRHOIDS, CAN I DO COLONICS?
As long as the hemorrhoids are not inflamed, it is ok to do colonics. It can be a good idea to do a colonic when a person has hemorrhoids as the colonic relieves the amount of pressure there is that is pressing on the inflamed nerves (hemorrhoids).
ARE YOUR SERVICES COVERED BY MY INSURANCE?
Currently, colon therapy is not covered by insurance.
HOW DO COLONICS HELP MY OVERALL SENSE OF WELL BEING AND HEALTH?
The colon is often an overlooked organ in health. The symptoms of a sluggish colon can vary widely: skin issues, bloating, digestive problems, fatigue etc. By helping the colon release what is burdening the body, many different issues can clear up or be greatly helped i.e. migraines, indigestion, skin issues, sluggish liver, bloating etc. To learn more about how colonics help with our health, click here.
IS ONE COLONIC ENOUGH?
Shifts in the body and mind can happen after one session or even a few, however this is not a quick fix. Just like anything in life that we want to create, it's a process. It can take time to cultivate the kind of health that we want for ourselves.
